Learn how to lift safely with excavators

Though excavators are made for digging, they can also be fitted with attachments to perform other tasks, including lifting and carrying some loads. But this activity introduces risks. IHSA’s comprehensive new Lifting with Excavators guideline (W463) details the hazards involved with using excavators for lifting operations and the best practices for controlling these hazards.

Analyze the legal implications of a fall incident

On June 1, IHSA’s Ottawa Regional Labour-Management Health and Safety Committee is hosting a unique mock trial examining a fall incident and the legal duties of a supervisor. The session will place participants at the centre of a workplace fall incident—to analyze its circumstances, evaluate jobsite decision-making, and assess potential liability.

A successful showcase of the skilled trades

IHSA’s Powerline Apprenticeship and Training team recently hosted the powerline technician and arborist competitions at the 2026 Skills Ontario Competition. We were proud to both support the apprentices as they demonstrated their skills and showcase the skilled trades as a safe and rewarding career path to Ontario students.

We came together to improve safety

In April, IHSA and our system partner, Workplace Safety and Prevention Services (WSPS), hosted the 2026 Partners in Prevention Central conference in Mississauga. The sold-out event brought together hundreds of health and safety professionals to connect with one another and gain expert insights on everything from leadership to contractor management to MSD prevention.

Walking to honour those affected by workplace tragedies

IHSA staff were proud to be among the participants at recent Steps for Life events across Ontario. The charity walks, hosted by Threads of Life, raised awareness about the effects of workplace tragedies on workers’ families and communities. This year’s IHSA-sponsored walks took place in Kingston, Ottawa, Sarnia, Sudbury, Timmins, Toronto, and Thunder Bay.

Our latest safety videos and podcasts
IHSA’s videos and podcasts provide timely, easy-to-understand advice for improving health and safety at your workplace.
Our latest expert-led video highlights a common hazard of working outside: encountering poison ivy, giant hogweed, and other poisonous plants. The video helps you identify these plants and protect your skin from coming into contact with them. Another occupational health hazard is at the forefront of our new video on managing noise exposure, which discusses the importance of proper assessment and controls to prevent noise-induced hearing loss.
On the IHSA Safety Podcast, Episode 132 discusses how Ontario employers—especially small and growing businesses—can build effective occupational health and safety systems using WSIB’s Health and Safety Excellence program (HSEp). Episode 133 switches gears to look at the risks of commercial diving operations, which are often undertaken to repair or maintain underwater infrastructure, and why ensuring diver competency is an essential safety practice.
