Helmets To Hardhats Newsletter

April Stats & Updates

A message from the Executive Director, James Hogarth
As we move into another busy season, I want to update you on the exciting progress happening both on the ground and behind the scenes here at Helmets to Hardhats. Our career advisors have been on the ground, engaging directly with the communities we serve—connecting with Veterans, military families, and unions to ensure we deliver the support and resources they need. It’s an incredibly fulfilling experience to hear the impact of our outreach efforts and learn firsthand how we are making a difference. At the same time, behind the scenes, we’ve been hard at work making strategic decisions to strengthen our organization further. This includes the election of a new Board of Directors, whose collective expertise will allow us to better serve our union and military clients, bringing fresh ideas and a renewed commitment to our mission. These changes are crucial as we continue to evolve and position ourselves for even greater success in the future. This includes saying goodbye and offering our heartfelt thanks to Alex Loula for his time and dedication as Chair of the Board of Directors at Helmets to Hardhats. At the same time, we are pleased to welcome Sean Strickland, Executive Director of Canada’s Building Trades Unions, as our new Chair. His leadership and experience will be invaluable as we continue to grow. Thank you for your ongoing support as we work together to honour those who have served and create pathways to a brighter future. There is a lot of work ahead, but I am more confident than ever in our direction.
Best regards, James Hogarth

April Updates

Helmets to Hardhats is proud to announce the election of our new Board of Directors—an exciting step forward as we continue to grow and strengthen our impact. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Alex Loula for his years of dedicated service and guidance as Chair. We now welcome Sean Strickland, Executive Director of Canada’s Building Trades Unions, as our new Chair, along with a diverse and experienced board representing unions, industry, contractors, and employers:

Marc Arsenault (Ontario Provincial Building and Construction Trades Council), Ron Balzer (Balzer’s Canada Inc.), Heather Ferguson (Millwrights), Curtis Houston (Canadian Elevator Industry Educational Program), Gary Kitchen (Teamsters), Joe McFadyen (Construction Labour Relations Alberta), Terry Parker (Alberta Provincial Building Trades Council), and Terry Snooks (UA). Their leadership will help us continue delivering opportunities and support for Veterans, military families, and the skilled trades workforce across Canada.
Our new outreach advisors are hitting the ground running! In Ontario, our team was busy visiting UA Locals across the GTA and making stops at IFSTC to connect with employers and promote the value veterans bring to the skilled trades. Meanwhile, in Nova Scotia, our Career Advisors were front and centre at the Nova Scotia Works Job Fair, meeting military candidates and helping grow the future skilled workforce.

We were proud to present at Canada’s Building Trades “Our Skills, Our Voice” Conference.

Our Executive Director took the stage to share exciting updates on the Helmets to Hardhats program — but he wasn’t alone.

We were honoured to be joined by Curtis Houston, Assistant Director of the Canadian Elevator Industry Educational Program, proud Veteran, IUEC Local 50 Member and H2H alumni. Curtis shared how the program helped launch his civilian career and the lasting impact it’s had on his life.

Thanks to the unwavering support of Canada’s Building Trades Unions, we’re able to continue this important work—helping Veterans and reservists transition into meaningful careers in the skilled trades.

A powerful reminder of why we do what we do.     Twitter Facebook Website Link
