IHSA training spotlight: WHMIS eLearning This year marks the end of a three-year period for Canadian companies to bring their hazardous materials practices in line with amendments to the federal Hazardous Products Regulation and the requirement for Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS) training. IHSA’s recently updated WHMIS eLearning program can help you and your workers satisfy the education requirements for hazardous products, with information on hazardous materials classification, understanding safety data sheets, and much more.

A busy year for IHSA’s expert trainers In 2024, IHSA trained 40,037 workers in 6,688 instructor-led courses. That includes sessions taught at our facilities and customers’ locations, and courses by external partners. We also had 45,656 participants take our eLearning courses. IHSA’s training programs give workers the knowledge they need to stay safe on the job and return home at the end of the day. Get to know the new NCSO®/NHSA™ portal IHSA’s NCSO®/NHSA™ web portal streamlines the application and certification process for National Construction Safety Officer and National Health and Safety Administrator candidates. To ease the process for registrants, we’ve also developed a step-by-step guide with instructions on submitting your application, uploading your credentials, and signing up for exams.

Take the Ontario StressAssess mental health survey Workplace mental health hazards can affect your productivity and lead to physical illness or injury. IHSA invites construction and transportation workers to participate in StressAssess, a survey developed by the Occupational Health Clinics for Ontario Workers (OHCOW) to identify and understand psychological stressors at workplaces. The survey is anonymous and confidential—and is specific to construction workers or transportation workers.  
 
Upcoming Fleet Safety Council seminar On March 27, the Hamilton-Niagara chapter of the Fleet Safety Council will host its annual spring seminar. The half-day event in Burlington is open to anyone interested in transportation health and safety—and will feature a panel discussion on the “total cost of risk” with experts from the insurance industry. Register now.    

Ask an expert—live! Watch IHSA’s ongoing Ask a construction health and safety expert video series, where IHSA specialists Deb Moskal and David Dametto respond to questions from our members. The third episode recently outlined the importance of having an occupational health and safety policy statement and program. The next Q&A session, about competent supervision, will be broadcast on March 19 at 10 a.m. Tune in live or replay past episodes at ihsa.ca/live.  
 
Improving safety for road workers IHSA was proud to participate in the 98th annual Ontario Road Builders’ Association (ORBA) Convention in Toronto. The event covered a range of topics, including the need for a sustainable infrastructure workforce and the importance of preventing work zone intrusion. The latter panel featured expertise from Michelle Roberts, IHSA’s Vice President of Stakeholder and Public Relations. Read more about the convention.  
 
New IHSA Safety Podcast episodes The IHSA Safety Podcast welcomes industry experts who provide valuable, time-tested advice to help you control and eliminate workplace health and safety hazards.  

Episode 101 reveals the importance of understanding legal requirements when developing an occupational health and safety management system.  

Episode 102 looks at health and safety representatives for smaller businesses, including how they are selected and what their legislated responsibilities are.
